For years, we've been using a tube sock filled with rice and knotted on the open end any time we need warm moist heat. We'd toss it in the microwave for a minute, and it worked well despite being unattractive. The problem is, the rice would shift to one end, and after much use, the sock got a hole in the toe. Being too lazy to sew it shut, I rolled the toe end and safety pinned it. Good thing I always remember to remove the safety pin before throwing it in the microwave!
Verne's accident has left me wanting to make him as comfortable as possible. I found some ultra-soft, buffalo check flannel and whipped up a new rice warmer. It's about 6 inches across by 18 inches long, is lined with muslin to help keep the rice from poking through, and has stitching every 4 inches or so to hold the rice in place. He's been using it often, and is so pleased with the new design that he's already asked me to make more. He needs one for his kidney and his collarbone, and the sock just doesn't cut it anymore.

Great design on the rice warmer! That is very smart...we usually do a sock too. The kids don't always like the smell of the heated rice, but it works well.
I actually had a buckwheat one that my sister made for me - loved it!!! But I microwaved it too long and the buckwheat burnt (horrible smell). Is the rice more stable?
Also, I wanted to add that we are still praying for Verne and for you too as you care for him.
Oh, we love rice warmers. I had made a couple of ones for general use, but then my Bridget made us each our own personal one for Christmas. (last year? I think.) When he's doing a lot of traveling, JR likes to take his with him and toss it up on his dash board. It warms up beautifully and then he tucks it behind his back while driving. I like to use mine to warm up my chilly winter sheets before I hop in bed. :o)

oh yes, we love rice bags! One of my friends gave me a nifty tip: she makes the bag and then makes a flannel slipcover. Then you can launder the slipcover so it's fresh - my kids drag these things around as loveys and they get dingy fast.
It cracks me up how long you made do with a sock and a safety pin :)
