The End of Them

Seven bushels.

I started out very enthusiastically, overjoyed with God's providence, and anxious to preserve it for the winter. Midway through them, I felt like I'd never get done. My hands felt like they were in a permanently curled position from all of the peeling. I'm so thankful for my many helpers: my husband, my children, and our neighbor. I could have never finished without any of them.

So, what do seven bushels of pears yield?

♥ 2 gallons Dehydrated Pears
♥ 4 half-pints Vanilla Pear Jam
♥ 4 half-pints unsweetened Spiced Vanilla Pear Jam
♥ 9 half-pints Spiced Vanilla Pear Jam
♥ 9 half-pints Pear Honey
♥ 9 pints Caramel Spice Pear Butter
♥ 29 half-pints Caramel Spice Pear Butter
♥ 31 pints Diced Pears
♥ 42 LARGE individual portions Pear Leather
♥ 66 quarts Pear Halves
♥ Pear cakes

and LOADS of pears eaten fresh.  And now, they are DONE!

Would you believe we aren't tired of pears yet?

That is so amazing! I really am in awe of what you have accomplished this summer. Also you didn't just "can" pears - you made gourmet food items!

Well done!

Oh Tracy - I bet it does feel good to have that done. I remember peeling apples one year until my hands just ached. Just the name of your Caramel Spice Pear Butter sounds delicious; your house must be smelling amazing! :o)

I answered you on my blog, but I know how hard it is to get around ... so ... in answer to your question ...

I've not tried lard - though I've heard it does make a very flaky crust. In my experimentation crust with all shortening tasted a bit flat and all butter was somewhat fragile. I just kept pulling from different recipes and tweaking until I got what we liked. The result is that the final recipe has been jotted on the edge of another recipe for a few years now and keeps getting lost in the shuffle. :o) My blog seemed like a safe place to plant it for now. Let me know if you experiment with lard - I'd love to know how it turns out in taste and texture.
