All work and no play... well you know. We've not been to the county fair once since moving here, and thought it was about time to go. After going, I no longer feel like a bad parent for not attending before this.
I remember the fair (in another state!) as being lots of exhibitions. Long, wide barns full of horses, cows, swine, sheep, goats, rabbits, and chickens. We would walk through to see who won the blue ribbon, and taking notice of the "Grand Champion" banners proudly displayed in the stalls. I remember large tents set up with tables where you could sit to eat after you'd made your food purchases. I remember games, and rides. I remember large buildings full of canned goods, photography, and quilts on display. I remember some sort of entertainment being offered in the grandstands all day long.
Our fair doesn't open until 5:30 PM. There wasn't one animal in sight. No quilts, no photography, no canned goods. No demolition derby.
What has the world come to?
$10 apiece to walk around, and an agricultural building filled with inflatables. It was disappointing to say the least.
To children who have never been to a good fair, though? It was wonderful.

We recently went to a town carnival and it was LAME!!!! However, every year we go to the county fair and it's as you described - animals, homemade goods, derbys, musical groups. Very expensive but lots of fun!
ahh!!! your pictures bring back such fond memories..and make me hungry for funnel cake! Is funnel cake good for breakfast? :)

Your description of a good fair is our local one! If you want to go to a good fair come at the end of September, on Friday night we even have equine events and calf roping!
It is my favorite kind of fair.
We were so blessed to live for several years in the TN county that hosts the largest fair in the state. It is larger than the state fair in Nashville, and it is just as the memories you described . . . competitions for agriculture, animals, baking/canning, photography, sewing, etc. It also had lots of church booths and of course music performances (it is just outside Nashville!). I have to admit that rides and funnel cakes aren't all bad, though! ;o) By the way, you're photos are terrific - love 'em!
Our Fair is in just over a month, and I CAN'T WAIT! The baby is due a week and a half later, and having not missed fair week in 19 years, I am praying he doesn't come early!
Ours is a very agricultural/4-H based one, and the county/Fair board has worked hard to keep it that way. Lots of animals, produce, farm machinery, hand crafts, etc. etc. etc.
I enter a good 30 items, and over the last few years, I have won around $100 all together. It's my Joanne Fabrics "mad money"!
If you ever get the notion to, go to my August and September archives, I always have lots of pictures from Fair week!

No animals!??!?! No quilts?!?!!? No canned goods?!?!? Bummer.
