Little Granny

They are all over the Internet, these granny square quilts. At first I wondered what all the rage was. I like scrappy quilts, but wasn't falling in love with the blocks that were totally mismatched. I decided to give the block a try, but to make it a little more coordinated.

The instructions on Blue Elephant Stitches said to cut the squares at 2.5 inches. Randi's mini quilt was adorable, so I decided to make mine mini, too. Besides, I seem to be enjoying the whole mini-quilt business lately. My squares are 1.5 inches, as is my sashing. It looks like Randi's sashing might be a little narrower.

I chose cheery 30's reproduction prints. After my trial block, which is featured in the center of my quilt, I was in love. These blocks go together quickly and accurately. I love that!

I hand-quilted a quarter inch away from each granny square, which extended into the sashing. I'm smitten with the way this little quilt turned out! It measures about 17.75 inches square.

I searched my stash for a 30's print that would bring all of my fabrics together, and used it for the backing and binding.

I now understand what all the fuss is about. This quilt was fast, and fun, and I daresay I'd like to make a larger version.
